Does Supply Chain Management Deserve your Focus?

It has been said on many occasions that “companies do not compete but Supply Chains do!”  This statement is certainly more relevant than ever as the supply chains which are the backbone of the world’s leading companies are becoming more global, more complex, more immediate, more extended, and therefore more of a competitive differentiator.

Increasingly, executives at the highest levels of an organization are recognizing that supply chain management is tremendously important for the overall health of the business and are placing the topic on the board room agenda.  The discussions which are occurring today however have changed considerably over the years – expanding from topics involving the physical aspects of the Supply Chain such as the movement of goods, warehousing, or inventories to discussions which are often now about the complex topics of information management and financial management as well.

The increasing focus on the supply chain however, does not come without both concern and complication.  As the supply chain enterprise expands - there continues to be a greater need for the partners to further collaborate and integrate.  This requires a degree of information sharing and visibility and perhaps the most difficult requirement - that of compromise.  Such openness and collaboration means that individual companies must no longer focus solely on the optimisation of their own supply chain but must focus and take decisions that ensure optimisation across the entire supply network.

Profiting from Performance Management

Is there any better reason to commit yourself and your company to Performance Management than profit?  There might be various ways to describe the value that is derived from disciplined process management and measurement but they add up to profitable performance management (PM). This article will illuminate the many ways PM can impact your bottom line.

Before we start adding up the financial return, let’s discuss the elements of performance management that are required for success.  Building block number one captures the process and associated factors.  An effective methodology includes documenting the detail in the form of a process map.  The map should reflect all inputs, outputs, resources, cycle times and process dependencies.  A graphical depiction of the process conveys how the work is carried out, indicating everything required along the way.  A comprehensive map is a recipe for the business process.  Consider the process steps that lead to a purchasing decision such as confirming BOM detail, qualifying vendors, quoting material and labor, comparing and selecting the optimal supplier.  Each step can be a process in and of itself.  Ideally the mapping tool will support process improvement and is easily accessible in the form of a web-enabled map.

Fig 1:  The most effective mapping techniques are cross-functional and several-leveled as depicted above with a hierarchy of maps.

Knowledge Management: No Interpreter Needed

In a world of jargon, we recognise the term but still ask the question what is it anyway.  In fact Knowledge Management is a term worth understanding – not only to keep up with the corporate lingo but because it is the fastest path to value.  Companies in every sector are catching on to the new corporate measure and knowledge management is factoring into the ratios.

So let’s start with a definition we can remember and rattle off around the next corporate conference table.  Knowledge management is a discipline that identifies, creates, captures, organises, accesses, shares, uses and evaluates an organisation’s intellectual assets.  This includes the easy to access stuff in the form of numbers, drawings along with the not so easy to capture experiences and know how in the memory banks of employees everywhere.  Might need a cheat sheet for all of that but a statement by Allee left a Knowledge Management (KM) impression that has lingered – “It is setting knowledge free to find its own path”.  So in my words KM is about harnessing intelligence and by sharing it with others, building more knowledge.

It is important to distinguish knowledge from data and information.  Data is a set of discrete, objective facts about events.  .

Information allows us to organise facts to describe situations.  Knowledge requires human experience to translate the information and apply to more experiences.  Said another way; data is unorganized numbers, words, sounds and images.  Information is date processed into meaningful patterns.  Knowledge is information put into productive use and made actionable.
